Today's Games

April 29, 1995

UMBC (4-7) at No. 3 VIRGINIA (10-2)

Site: Klockner Stadium, Charlottesville, Va.

Time: 2 p.m.

Outlook: UMBC has no depth, and that's why it has lost the past four games in the second half after leading at halftime, allowing 40 second-half goals. Last year, Virginia won, 20-3. UMBC M Matt Shearer (24, 9) and M Brian Belford (15, 9) should make it interesting for the first half, anyway.

No. 7 LOYOLA (9-2) at No. 13 GEORGETOWN (9-3)

Site: Harbin Field, Washington

Time: 2 p.m.

Outlook: This should be a defensive game. Georgetown has allowed nine goals or fewer in eight games, and Loyola has allowed eight or fewer in eight games. Both teams have solid goalkeepers. Loyola's Tim McGeeney has a .685 save percentage and the Hoyas' Jim Coale has a .646 save percentage. Loyola should have more offensive firepower, led by A Brian Duffy (22 goals, 30 assists) and M Del Halladay (28, 8).

NAVY (5-6) at STONY BROOK (8-4)

Site: Seawolves Field, Stony Brook, N.Y.

Time: 2 p.m.

Outlook: Navy gets a chance to end its season on a positive note and with a .500 record. A Matt Long (23, 12) and Charles Bertrand (25, 9), as they have all year, will again have to carry Navy. Stony Brook counters with A Chris Theofield (23, 24) and A Chris Kollner (25, 13).

N No. 5 MARYLAND (7-3) vs. HOBART (6-4) in Fleet Invitational

Site: Brown Stadium, Providence, R.I.

Time: 3:30 p.m.

Outlook: Maryland has lost two in a row and will need two solid performances over the next two days. The Terps should have too much talent for Hobart. A Rob Chomo (19, 24) and A Andrew Whipple (16, 17) carry most of Maryland's offensive load, and G Brian Dougherty (.615 save percentage) anchors the defense. A Matt Crowther (18, 19) and A Josh Kenny (23, 17) lead Hobart.

No. 1 JOHNS HOPKINS (10-0) at No. 15 TOWSON STATE (5-4)

Site: Minnegan Stadium

Time: 8 p.m.

Radio: WITH (1230 AM), WWLG (1360 AM)

Outlook: A victory would great improve Towson's chances of making the playoffs. The Tigers need to be selective on shots and control the tempo of the game because the Blue Jays have the most potent attack with Terry Riordan (36, 16), Brian Piccola (33, 15) and Dave Marr (16, 29). Towson is paced by A Matt Clune (24, 7), A David Quinn (15, 8) and A Dudley Dixon (15, 7).
