Waszgis' HR in 13th lifts Baysox, 5-4

BOWIE -- Catcher B. J. Waszgis hammered a 1-1 pitch from Joe Caruso over the left-field fence leading off the bottom of the 13th inning last night, giving the Bowie Baysox a 5-4 victory over the Trenton Thunder at Prince George's County Stadium.

The blow gave the win to Greg Knowles (1-0), the sixth Bowie pitcher.

Earlier, Jason Friedman had made his Baysox debut a memorable one, crashing a three-run homer over the right-field fence on an 0-2 count with two out in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.

A left-handed hitter, Friedman connected off left-hander Ed Riley, who had relieved Joe Hudson with the purpose of getting out Friedman.

Hudson had walked Jose Millares and Roy Hodge to set up the shot by a player acquired from the Red Sox's organization in a trade a day earlier.

Earlier, it appeared that the hard-luck story of Bowie starter Garrett Stephenson would continue in a game that had two early reversals because of umpires' decisions.

Stephenson might have sailed through the night had things happened differently in the first.

Bowie had one run in on singles by Kim Bartee, Matt Howard and T. R. Lewis and one out when Harry Berrios hit a shot deep to left-center.

Trenton center fielder Aaron Fuller caught the ball off the top of the lower fence, and Howard, who originally had gone down the line toward the plate, retreated to tag up.

But after apparently scoring, Howard was ruled out on an appeal play.

The way Stephenson has been pitching, even the one run might have been sufficient. But the Thunder scored four of its runs in the fourth.

NOTE: The Baysox added another pitcher when Jim Dedrick reported from Rochester. Dedrick was 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 11 2/3 innings for the Red Wings. He was 8-3 with a 2.54 ERA for the 1993 Baysox at Memorial Stadium, missing the league ERA title by falling 5 2/3 innings short of the minimum needed.
