COLLEGE PARK -- Loyola's slim hopes of earning a berth in the women's NCAA lacrosse tournament were diminished last night by a Maryland team looking to capture the tournament's top seed.

In a rematch of last year's national semifinal, the No. 1-ranked Terps took a 6-2 halftime lead and defeated the ninth-ranked Greyhounds, 13-4, at Byrd Stadium.

Senior midfielder Laura Harmon led the Terps with three goals and two assists, and junior Kelly Amonte, a two-time All-American, added three goals and an assist.

"I think their coach really wanted them to end their season on a good note and they pushed us to the limit, but we were fortunate to finish," said Maryland coach Cindy Timchal, whose team will play host to No. 6 William and Mary tomorrow night and No. 2 Princeton next Wednesday.

"I think Loyola has a great team and a lot of speed, and they really made us pick it up defensively."

The Terps (11-0), who stretched their regular-season win streak to 34 games, scored two goals in the first 41 seconds and led 4-0 less than four minutes into the game on a goal by sophomore Sarah Forbes.

Stephanie Roberts put Loyola on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal at the six-minute mark, but Harmon answered that with two unassisted goals.

Maryland, which downed the Greyhounds, 19-4, in last year's tournament before losing to Princeton in the championship game, erased Loyola's hopes for a comeback by scoring seven straight goals in the second half, including three by Amonte and one each by Harmon, Cathy Nelson, Ryan Laubach and Karen MacCrate (one goal, two assists).

Kerri Johnson paced the Greyhounds (9-6) with two goals, and senior Mandy Lewis had two assists.

"We knew we had to shut down their fast break and we weren't able to accomplish that," said Greyhounds coach Diane Aikens.

"We didn't handle the ball well, we made a few mistakes and had a couple of bad breaks. We needed to capitalize on every single opportunity and we did not do that."
