NBA -- Named Utah Jazz F Karl Malone (30.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists) Player of the Week.

USA Basketball -- Named Lenny Wilkens, Atlanta Hawks coach, as coach of the 1996 U.S. Olympic men's basketball team.

College

Carquest Bowl -- Announced that Carquest Corp. renewed its title sponsorship for three years.

Conference USA -- Announced it will begin basketball competition this year. The new 12-school league will include Alabama-Birmingham, Cincinnati, DePaul, Marquette, Memphis, Saint Louis, Louisville, North Carolina-Charlotte, Southern Mississippi, South Florida and Tulane. Houston will begin participation in 1996.

Maryland -- Named LB Mike Settles and WR Richard Roberts football co-captains. Named C. J. Kupec assistant director of athletics for advancement.

Illinois State -- Announced that sophomore basketball F Skipp Schaefbauer will transfer from East Carolina.
