OUTLOOK: The Capitals (19-17-7) are in sixth place in the Eastern Conference. The defending Stanley Cup champion Rangers (19-21-3) have 41 points and are in a three-way tie for eighth place. The Capitals are led by Peter Bondra's 30 goals and G Jim Carey's 16-6-2 record and 2.00 goals-against average. The Rangers are led by Mark Messier's 14 goals and 34 assists, and have been helped by the addition of RW Pat Verbeek, who has eight goals since joining New York 14 games ago. The Caps are 2-1 vs. the Rangers this season, losing in Madison Square Garden, 5-4, Feb. 8. New York reported no injuries before yesterday's game. The Capitals report that D Igor Ulanov (broken foot) is out. D Ken Klee needed six stitches to close a gash on his eyebrow after Saturday's game but is available.
