VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

April 23, 1995|By Kevin Harrison

The Volunteers: Joann Federanich of Severn and Audrey Dooley of Rivera Beach are volunteers in a new patient relations program at North Arundel Hospital.

Mrs. Federanich also volunteers one day a week at one of the hospital's information desks, and Mrs. Dooley is active in Mount Carmel United Methodist Church in Pasadena.

About the program: Gail Dym, director of volunteer services at North Arundel, says the volunteers ensure that patients admitted through the emergency room and their families get information and assistance.

Ms. Dym says the two volunteers "are visiting up to 30 patients each day. Volunteers were chosen for their people skills, including the ability to work independently. . . ."

Joann Federanich: "We go to the patients who have been in the emergency room and provide them with booklets which contain information about the hospital . . . and the programs like pastoral care.

"In the booklets are also directions to hotels for family members if they're from out of town.

"I just wanted to come out and do something for the community."

Audrey Dooley: "My husband was a patient at North Arundel, and I knew that the hospital -- the nursing staff, the doctors, everybody -- was so kind.

"I had always said I was going to do some volunteer work at a hospital or a nursing home. I thought I could return something for the kindness I was shown."
