Baysox dealt 8-0 thumping

BOWIE -- Early-season weather problems had limited Portland to four games going into last night's contest, but the Sea Dogs showed little rust.

Portland unleashed six extra-base hits on the Bowie Baysox and coasted to an 8-0 Eastern League victory before 2,897 at Prince George's County Stadium.

Only about half the ticket buyers were in the stands on a chilly night to watch Lou Lucca start the onslaught with a two-run homer off Bowie starter Toby Lehman in the second inning.

It only got worse for Lehman (0-2), who went on to surrender eight runs in four-plus innings before yielding to reliever Charles Devereaux.

Lehman, a Rule V draftee of the Chicago White Sox, had pitched respectably in his first start after yielding two first-inning runs to Norwich.

"There's not much to say," said Baysox manager Bob Miscik. "Toby didn't take much out there and our bats were frozen. "They say that during a season you're going to blow them out 50 times, get blown out 50 times and the other 50 are what matter. Tonight was one of the times we got blown out."

Jimmy Kremers hit a bases-empty homer off Lehman in the fourth inning and the Sea Dogs got to him for three of their four doubles as well.

The Baysox managed very little offense of their own. Portland starter Will Cunnane (11-3 with a 1.43 ERA at Kane County last year) held them to a scratch single through five innings.

Harry Berrios got that hit when Lucca, the Sea Dogs' third baseman, screened shortstop Edgar Renteria on Berrios' bouncer. The ball went through, and Renteria had no play by the time he controlled it.

Reliever Bryan Ward was just as tough for two more innings, allowing only an infield single by Eric Chavez that forced Renteria into the left-side hole.

Berrios tagged the first safe blow to the outfield off Ward in the eighth, a line-drive double to left.

The victory enabled Portland (4-1) to remain atop the league's Northern Division.
