William Melczer, 70, a Syracuse University professor who specialized in Christian iconography and Renaissance studies, died Tuesday. A native of Hungary, he was an internationally known scholar of medieval Christian, Romanesque and Renaissance art.

Fleeta Louise Hoke, 94, a former food editor at the Los Angeles Times, died April 7. She published her daily column from 1939 until her retirement in 1964. She was known to readers as Marian Manners, a pseudonym that has been used over the years by other Times food writers.
