Georgetown stops Navy, 14-13

ANNAPOLIS -- Georgetown goalie Jim Coale turned away a fast-break shot by Navy's Brendon Drew with a chest save with 15 seconds to play to preserve the No. 12 Hoyas' 14-13 victory over Navy last night.

Rob Bailey led Navy (5-4) with five goals; Dan Martin and Jim Fenzel had four goals each to pace the Hoyas (8-2).

After battling through a windy three quarters to a 10-10 tie, the rain came just at the close of the third quarter and the entire fourth quarter was played in a heavy downpour.

The No. 13 Midshipmen broke the 10-10 tie with a goal by John Hanna just 11 seconds into the final quarter. But Georgetown wasted little time regaining the lead on goals by Jim Fenzel and B. J. Thompson.

Navy tied the game at 12 on an unassisted goal from Andy Ross midway in the quarter. Then the Hoyas took the lead for good on Fenzel's fourth goal on the game and added insurance on a goal by Chris Remington.

Navy pulled to with a goal on Hanna's second goal of the quarter, but the last minute try by the Middies fell short on the save by Coale, who finished with 12 saves.

"The teams were pretty evenly matched," said Navy coach Richie Meade. "We played well for most of the game but we came up with some mistakes in crucial situations.

"You have to give their goalie credit he must have made four or five saves in the last few minutes and he made that huge one at the end."

The game started on a down note for Navy's sophomore goalie Tim Fox, making his first start of the season.

The Hoyas took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Fenzel 1:42 into the first quarter and less than a minute later the Mids were down 2-0 on a fluke goal.

The Midshipmen were clearing out of their defensive zone when senior midfielder Dan Sullivan passed the ball back toward Fox, who did not see the ball and it went into the net for a team-goal.

Navy didn't take long to shake those early problems, however Rob Bailey scored the first of his four first-quarter goals at the 2:23 mark to get Navy on the board.

His next two goals gave Navy its first lead, 3-2, with just over seven minutes left in the first quarter.

But Georgetown tied the game at 3 Dan Martin's first goal of the night. Matt Long put Navy back on top and Bailey's fourth goal of the quarter gave the Mids a 5-3 lead late in the quarter.
