Joyful celebrations of Easter, Passover go on through weekend

Joyful celebrations of Easter and Passover coincide this year. Passover, one of seven major holidays in the Jewish calendar, recalls the exodus of the Jews, led by Moses, from Egypt. May you enjoy the company of family and friends at your Seder table.

Sunday is Easter, the chief feast of Christians, who commemorate the resurrection of Jesus after his crucifixion. It is a day for rejoicing after recalling the passion and death of Christ. Local clergy encourage you to join them in Easter and Holy Week activities.

Today you can mark the Last Supper at the 7:30 p.m. Holy Thursday service with Communion at Poplar Springs United Methodist Church. The Tenebrae Service at Poplar Springs with the members of Jennings Chapel United Methodist Church, will be at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow. The churches will join for an Easter Sunrise Service at 6:45 a.m. at Lisbon United Methodist Church. 489-7185.

Shepherd of the Glen Lutheran Church in Glenwood holds a Holy Thursday service with Communion at 7:30 p.m. today. Members will observe Easter Sunday at a 10 a.m. Holy Communion worship service that will include vocal and handbell music. The chancel will be adorned with lilies. 442-1204.

Linden-Linthicum United Methodist Church in Clarksville has a 7:30 p.m. "Agape Love Feast" today. The choir will lead the congregation in worship about Jesus' final meal and the hours leading to his arrest and crucifixion. Tenebrae Services, called "Devotions at the Cross," at Linden-Linthicum are at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow. Saturday the church will have a free outdoor community Children's Easter Festival from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Bring your child, with a wagon or bike to decorate, to savor puppets, clowns, face painting, an egg hunt, an Easter parade and more. Sunday Sunrise service, led by the church youth at Linden-Linthicum, begins at 6:30 a.m. Breakfast follows. Easter services will be at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m., with Sunday school at 9:30 a.m. 531-5653.

St. James United Methodist Church in West Friendship has a Good Friday service at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow. Its sunrise service on Easter will begin at 6:30 a.m. in the "Chapel in the Woods," an outdoor chapel with benches and an altar carved out of the woods. At 11 a.m. Sunday, members will join for their Easter worship service with music by the bell and chancel choirs. 442-2020.

At noon today, St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fulton will have a celebration of Holy Eucharist, and at 7:30 p.m. there will be a Liturgy of the Lord's Supper and Stripping of the Altar in the main church. Tomorrow there will be a noon service in the All Saints Chapel and a 7:30 p.m. Good Friday service followed by the liturgy of the pre-sanctified in the main church. Easter services are at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. in the main church. 301-725-0241.

St. Louis Catholic Church in Clarksville will have a 7:30 p.m. Mass of the Lord's Last Supper today. Adoration of the blessed sacrament will continue from the conclusion of Mass until midnight. St. Louis church opens at noon Friday and will commemorate the solemn Passion Liturgy beginning at 3 p.m. Tableau Stations are at 7:30 p.m. Blessings of the Easter Food baskets will be at 1 p.m. Saturday. Easter Vigil services preceded by music for Holy Week begin at 7 p.m. Saturday. Easter Sunday Masses are at 6:45 a.m., 8 a.m., 9:15 a.m. and 11 a.m. and at 12:30 p.m. On Monday, there will be an Easter egg hunt at noon, sponsored by the Catholic Youth Ministry. Lisbon United Methodist Church will hold a Communion service at 8 p.m. tonight and will host a Good Friday Ecumenical Service at 1 p.m. tomorrow. Members and clergy from Lisbon United Methodist, Shepherd of the Glen Lutheran, St. Michael's Catholic, St. Paul's Episcopal, Calvary Lutheran, Poplar Springs and Jennings Chapel United Methodist, and St. Andrew's Episcopal churches join the service. The Lisbon church will hold a sunrise Easter service at 6:45 a.m. and have its regular Sunday service for Easter at 11 a.m. 489-7245.
