Gary M. Press, president and publisher of the weekly Baltimore Business Journal for the past 18 months, said yesterday that he is leaving to become publisher of the Palm Beach Jewish Times in Florida.

Mr. Press said no successor has been named by the BBJ's owner, American City Business Journals Inc. of Charlotte, N.C.

The 34-year-old publisher said he was returning to south Florida, where he published a lifestyle magazine before coming to Baltimore 3 1/2 years ago, because of the "excellent opportunity" at the Palm Beach weekly.

"Palm Beach is the fastest-growing market for the Jewish community so the opportunity there is virtually limitless," he said.

Mr. Press said the Jewish Times in Palm Beach, which is owned by the same company as the Baltimore Jewish Times, has a circulation of 17,000. He said the BBJ's circulation now stands at about 10,000 after growing 9 percent in the last 13 months.

Before becoming publisher of the BBJ in November 1993, Mr. Press worked for two years as the business publication's advertising director. He said the journal's revenues had doubled since he came to the publication.
