Straddling two worlds

April 02, 1995

In a secluded stone building in western Ellicott City, the Franciscans of St. Joseph Cupertino Friary find lodging, fellowship and a spiritual home as they go about their studies and community work.

With one foot in the religious world and one in the secular, the 20 priests and religious brothers follow the example of their order's founder, St. Francis of Assisi, through prayer, group living and charitable work.

St. Joseph Cupertino has been a fixture in Howard County for 66 years. But leaders of the friary worry that the life of spiritual dedication and discipline may be losing its appeal for young men.
