VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

April 02, 1995|By Kevin Harrison

The Volunteers: Ilene and Michael Fox, both of whom volunteer at Aleph-Bet Jewish Day School in Annapolis, exemplify most parents of the school's approximately 45 students.

Mrs. Fox, who formerly worked in investment banking at Legg Mason, served on the school's board of directors and now helps publicize events, coordinates fund-raisers and tries to get the school grants and other funding.

Mr. Fox, president of Chesapeake Bay Outfitters, a clothing company in St. Michael's, is a member of the school's Finance Committee and is on the board of directors.

The couple live in Annapolis and belong to Kneseth Israel, where the school is located. Their daughter Allison, 8, is in second grade at the school.

Ilene Fox: "It takes a real level of commitment on the parents to have their children in the school because of all the volunteer time that's required.

"I think it's great to see my daughter feeling so good about being Jewish and having such a a positive Jewish identity.

"It's very nurturing and I personally get a lot of gratification out of it."

Michael Fox: "I would say the parents who are actively involved . . . are easily putting in hundreds of hours a year. The school can't afford to have . . . paid professionals. It's a real hands-on effort.

"Some volunteers are trying to get grant money, some are on the board, some are actively involved in fund-raising. Everything is volunteer, from helping out in the kitchen to substitute teaching."

About the school: Aleph-Bet Jewish Day School is supported by six congregations and has classes for children from kindergarten through fifth grade. The school is at 1125 Spa Road in Annapolis.

According to the school's mission statement, it "sees itself as a pluralistic Jewish institution, embodying a variety of Jewish philosophies."
