Around the house

* Clean scum buildup from ceramic tile in shower area with a laundry pre-wash spray. Allow solution to penetrate; rub dirt away with a damp sponge.

* Remove lint from upholstered furniture with pantyhose. This quick procedure avoids getting out the vacuum cleaner.

* Measure area before buying a room-size rug. Spread newspapers that are the correct dimensions on floor to help determine placement.

* Use fabric softeners sparingly when laundering towels. Excessive amounts reduce the absorbency of the terry cloth.

* Remove white water rings from wood table. Dampen a soft cloth with water and put a small amount of toothpaste on it. Rub until stain disappears. A mixture of baking soda and toothpaste will help buff out stubborn stains.

* To hand-wash fine china or crystal, line sink with a towel which cushions dishes and stemware.

In the garden

* Give houseplants a bath by placing under the shower. Water should be tepid. Allow plants to be sprayed for a few minutes. Water will provide humidity and will rid plants of dust and insects.
