Police seeking suspect who fled station bathroom

March 31, 1995

A man who escaped from the Central District police station bathroom yesterday afternoon while officers waited for him to finish washing his hands remains at large.

Police said Maurice Burgess, 28, was last seen running toward East Baltimore Street shortly after 4 p.m.

Police said Mr. Burgess, of the 1700 block of W. Lafayette Ave., had just finished being fingerprinted after police arrested him yesterday afternoon for allegedly shoplifting from the Super Fresh market in the 200 block of McMechen St., on charges of burglary and resisting arrest.

When he failed to exit the bathroom several minutes later, police entered the room and discovered the man apparently had climbed onto a sink, removed several ceiling tiles and entered a crawl space.

Police said the man made his way through the crawl space for several yards before exiting through a hole in a westside stairwell wall.

From there, the escapee apparently walked down a flight of stairs and out a door.
