27 students, driver hurt in school bus mishap

Twenty-seven Meade High School students and their bus driver suffered minor injuries yesterday morning when their vehicle was struck by a Ford pickup truck, county police said.

The driver of the truck, Joseph Hundley, 52, of the 900 block of Redmore Drive, was taken to Kimbrough Army Hospital on Fort Meade. Officials at Fort Meade said yesterday afternoon that they expected Mr. Hundley to be treated and released.

Wyvette E. Hammond, 38, the driver of the bus, was treated at Howard County General Hospital and released. The students were taken to four area hospitals for treatment, school and hospital officials said.

Ms. Hammond stopped the bus about 7 a.m. to pick up a student in the 1200 block of Reece Road in Severn and had turned on her four-way flashers and warning lights. The police say Mr. Hundley, who was driving west on Reece Road, failed to stop and that his truck hit the back of the bus.

Thieves strike at 3 businesses

Thieves smashed the glass doors of three businesses on Generals Highway and stole cash and property totaling more than $570 Tuesday morning, county police said.

Officer Daniel Sereboff went to the 1300 block of Generals Highway shortly after 2 a.m. to investigate a series of burglar alarms. He found the front doors of S K Pizza and Subs, Bagels and More and the Crownsville Cleaners all shattered, police said.

The culprits took a $120 cash register containing $60 from the pizza shop, a $240 cash register containing $2 from the bagel shop, and also stole $150 from the cash register at the cleaners, police said.

Police stop results in drug arrest

A Crofton man who was stopped because his car had a cracked windshield and no front tag was arrested on drug charges Tuesday afternoon near Crofton Park, county police said.

Officer Michael Calvert was driving on Davidsonville Road near Farnborn Street about 4:30 p.m. when he saw a 1989 Dodge Colt, police said. He stopped the car, ran a check on the driver and found that the man had an outstanding warrant for violation of probation.

Officer Calvert arrested the man, searched him and found a guitar-shaped pipe with marijuana residue in the man's right jacket pocket, police said. Officers searched the man again at the Western District station and found 7 grams of marijuana tucked into the man's underwear.

Shawn Michael Moss, 24, of the 2300 block of Dartmouth Lane was charged with possession of marijuana, police said.
