Boston Red Sox -- Named Rick Wise pitching coach for Triple-A Pawtucket and Bill Maloney pitching coach for Single-A Battle Creek.

Detroit Tigers -- Promoted Double-A Jackson manager Bill Plummer to manager of Triple-A Toledo.

Pittsburgh Pirates -- Traded OF Ted Williams to the Kansas City Royals for future considerations. Sent C Edwin Rosado 1B Terry Lee and 3B Tom Mitchell to minor-league camp for reassignment.

Seattle Mariners -- Named Joaquin Contreras coach for Single-A Wisconsin.

St. Louis Cardinals -- Traded C Marc Ronan to the Milwaukee Brewers for C Glenn Sutko.

Texas Rangers -- Named Tim Lang major-league and organizational conditioning coach.

Basketball

NBA -- Fined Atlanta Hawks F Ken Norman $4,000 for failing to leave the court in a timely fashion after being ejected from a March 25 game against the Chicago Bulls.

Boston Celtics -- Placed G/F Rick Fox (bone spurs in both ankles) on the injured list. Signed F Tony Dawson to a 10-day contract.

College

NCAA -- Extended Washington State's probation for two years because of a new rules infraction case involving football and baseball athletes.

Southwestern Athletic Conference -- Suspended Sam Weaver, men's basketball coach at Alcorn State, for one game at the start of next season, and fined him $250 for his refusal to leave the court after being ejected from a game Feb. 13.

Ball State -- Extended the contract of Ray McCallum, men's basketball coach, through the 1999-2000 season.

Fairfield -- Added football and women's crew as varsity sports for the fall of 1996 and fall of 1997, respectively.

Marshall -- Extended the contract of Jim Donnan, football coach, through the 1999 season.

Utah -- Agreed to terms with Ron McBride, football coach, on a five-year contract.

Wisconsin-Milwaukee -- Named Ric Cobb men's basketball coach.

Carolina Panthers -- Signed free-agent DE Gerald Williams, who had been with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Chicago Bears -- Signed RB Darrell Thompson.

Cincinnati Bengals -- Signed free-agent RB Eric Bieniemy, who had been with the San Diego Chargers.

Houston Oilers -- Signed QB Chris Chandler. Released S Bubba McDowell.

Indianapolis Colts -- Signed TE Ed West.

Philadelphia Eagles -- Released RB Herschel Walker.

Pittsburgh Steelers -- Signed free-agent P Rohn Stark, who had been with the Indianapolis Colts.

San Francisco 49ers -- Signed RB Anthony Lynn, RB Troy Mills and G Rod Milstead.

Washington Redskins -- Signed free-agent LB Matt Vanderbeek, who had been with the Dallas Cowboys. Re-signed LB Erick Anderson and S Sebastian Savage.

Shreveport Pirates -- Signed WR/punt returner Rod Harris.

Hockey

NHL -- Suspended New Jersey Devils RW Claude Lemieux for three games and fined him $500 for an incident in the March 26 game against the New York Islanders. Suspended Winnipeg Jets RW Teemu Selanne for two games and fined him $500 for an incident in the March 25 game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Boston Bruins -- Recalled G John Blue from AHL Providence.

Pittsburgh Penguins -- Assigned F Markus Naslund to IHL Cleveland. Reassigned D Steve Bancroft from IHL Detroit to AHL St. John's.

San Jose Sharks -- Sent RW Shean Donovan to IHL Kansas City.
