5-0 Blue Jays rule the roost in poll

March 27, 1995|By From Staff Reports

Johns Hopkins' 22-13 win over top-ranked Virginia now officially can be called a convincing victory. The proof came yesterday when all 11 voters moved the previously second-ranked Blue Jays ahead of the Cavaliers in this week's poll.

The Blue Jays, in following Syracuse and Virginia as the third No. 1 in the three weeks of the poll this season, are 5-0 for the first time since 1989. Johns Hopkins has outscored its opponents 85-51.

The Cavaliers (5-1) slipped to No. 3, two points behind No. 2 Maryland. The Terps (6-0), who moved up two spots and are off to their best start in eight years, play at Virginia on Saturday.

"I think this is a group intended on improving week after week," said coach Dick Edell, whose Terps beat North Carolina, 13-12, for the first time in 10 meetings Saturday. "Carolina was ranked below us, and we respected them. There is no doubt in my mind that Virginia is one of the best teams out there. They are keeping me up at night this week."

Loyola (5-1), which lost by three goals to Brown on Saturday, dropped four places to its lowest ranking of the year at No. 7. The Greyhounds fell behind No. 4 Syracuse and No. 5 Princeton, who each have two losses.
