UMBC holds off VMI, 13-9, for 3rd straight win

Brian Belford had three goals and two assists to lead UMBC over Virginia Military, 13-9, yesterday before 515 at UMBC Stadium.

The Retrievers (4-3) have won three straight and are above .500 for the first time this season. UMBC, which never trailed, took a 10-1 halftime lead but had to withstand a 6-1 second-half run by the Keydets.

John Ripley scored back-to-back goals to cut the gap to 12-9 with 2:14 remaining, but UMBC held the ball until Belford finished the scoring with nine seconds left.

The Retrievers outshot VMI 51-32, including 20-4 in the second quarter. Matt Shearer, Chris Lloyd, Chad Henry and Joe Wojciechowski each scored two goals.

Ripley led VMI (4-1) with three goals.
