No. 2 Arkansas (29-6) vs. No.6 Memphis (24-9) NCAA TOURNAMENT

March 24, 1995

What: NCAA Midwest Regional semifinal

Where: Kemper Arena, Kansas City, Mo.

When: Tonight, 8

TV: Channel 9.

How they got there: Arkansas beat Texas Southern, 79-78, and Syracuse, 96-94, in OT; Memphis beat Louisville, 77-56, and Purdue, 75-73.

Outlook: Arkansas has another game in which it appears to be the clear favorite on paper, but nothing has come easily for the defending champions, who were lucky to avoid overtime in their NCAA opener and needed a Syracuse blunder to escape the second round. Nonetheless, the Razorbacks are 12-1 in their past 13 games, a run that began with a one-point victory over Memphis on Feb. 9. The only loss was to Kentucky in the Southeastern Conference tournament championship. Two junior forwards hold the key. If the Tigers' David Vaughn, who missed five games in February with a stress fracture in his foot, isn't up to bumping with Corliss Williamson in the low post, the Big Nasty should be able to power the Razorbacks into Sunday's regional final. This is the only Sweet 16 game that is a rematch of a regular-season game. Memphis doesn't have a senior among its top eight players.
