No.2. Connecticut (27-4) vs. No. 3 Maryland (26-7) NCAA TOURNAMENT

March 23, 1995

What: NCAA West Regional semifinal

Where: Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, Calif.

When: Tonight, approximately 10:35

How they got there: Maryland beat Gonzaga, 87-63, and Texas, 82-68; Connecticut beat Tennessee-Chattanooga, 100-71, and Cincinnati, 96-91

Outlook: This will be a matchup of the best inside player in the country -- Maryland's Joe Smith -- against a team with one of the best perimeter players -- Connecticut's Ray Allen. Whoever gets the most support will likely make it to Saturday's regional final. Both teams stumbled at the end of the regular season, and both played reasonably well in Salt Lake City last week. If the Terps don't fall too far behind early, which is their custom, they could be tough at the end.
