Pedestrian hit, hurt by car man charged

March 23, 1995

A 21-year-old Columbia man was charged with driving while intoxicated after his car struck a woman walking across the street Tuesday night, Howard County police said.

Thomas Hocker, of Cross Fox Lane in Columbia's Wilde Lake village, was released on personal recognizance hours after the accident, a District Court commissioner said.

The victim, Freda Goldberg, 51, of the 8300 block of Montgomery Run Road in Ellicott City, was released from the Maryland Shock Trauma Center yesterday afternoon.

About 11 p.m. Tuesday, police say, Mr. Hocker made a left turn in his Pontiac Firebird onto Wincopin Circle, near the Bennigan's Restaurant in Columbia's Town Center. Ms. Goldberg was crossing the street at the time and was hit.

A breath test administered by police showed Mr. Hocker's blood-alcohol content was .10, the legal measure for intoxication, police said.
