Two Meade students plead guilty in hallway brawl

Two Meade High School students pleaded guilty yesterday in Anne Arundel Juvenile Court to charges stemming from a brawl in a hallway last fall that injured the school librarian.

A 16-year-old pleaded guilty to battery and a 15-year-old to disturbing school activities.

Donald Gobbi, the 50-year-old librarian, was knocked to the floor and kicked in the head, back and legs several times after he rushed to intervene, according to testimony. The brawl occurred in a second-floor hallway about 10:30 a.m. Sept. 30.

Four other students were found guilty Feb. 7 and have been sentenced to juvenile detention facilities.

Assistant State's Attorney Lawrence J. Caporale said yesterday that he will ask Judge Lawrence H. Rushworth to place the 16-year-old student in a juvenile detention facility when he is sentenced April 18. Juvenile sentences run for indefinite periods, he said.

Mr. Caporale said he will make no recommendation on sentencing the 15-year-old, who did not attack Mr. Gobbi, but was charged based on witness statements that he fought with another youth.
