Family first aid course to be offered in Odenton

Spring and summer are just around the corner. To get everyone ready, Anne Arundel Medical Center and Odenton Elementary School are offering "Family First Aid." Learn to handle the normal summertime emergencies, basic first aid principles and when to get professional help. Pool and bicycle safety and remedies for sunburn, bug bites and rashes will be discussed. The course will be held from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday at Odenton Elementary School. The fee is $10. The Waugh Chapel Elementary PTA and Heisman Fine Art Gallery Inc. will present a benefit art show and auction at 6 p.m. April 7 at Waugh Chapel Elementary School, 840 Sunflower Drive in Odenton. Original oils, watercolors, enamels, etchings, lithographs and other graphics will be on sale. The auction begins at 7 p.m., after a one-hour preview. The proceeds will go to the Waugh Chapel Elementary PTA. Admission costs $5. Complimentary beverages and hors d'oeuvres will be served. Congratulations to the Gambrills-Odenton Recreation Council (GORC) Allstart Cheerleading Competition Squad. The squad won a bid to compete in the Eastern Championship Competition in Williamsburg, Va., and was first runner-up at the Maryland Cheerleading Championships in February.

Members of the squad are Karen Basciano, Adrienna Cordova, Jessica Cunningham, Melissa Daley, Ruthie Fisher, Becky Golombeck, Natalie Herberger, Mary Herberger, Ashley Hesgard, Julie Hodgson, Alana Marchetti, Kristina Quinn, Katie Quinn, Kelly Scott, Elizabeth Tall, Alexis Viera, Beth Vladich and Christina Woodruff.

Arundel Middle students Kristina Quinn and Jessica Cunningham and Arundel Senior High cheerleaders Veronica Hoffman, Jenny Palmer and Shannon Quinn qualified for the National All-American Cheer and Dance Invitationals, which will be held in Honolulu. They will compete against cheerleaders from across the United States and will perform in the half-time show at the Aloha Bowl in December.

GORC Cheerleading will hold fall registration for new cheerleaders from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the upper field concession stand at GORC park. Priority will be given to girls from the Arundel and Old Mill feeder systems. Girls that live out of the area will be put on a waiting list. For more information, call Kathy LeTourneau at 672-6526.

Attention Super Fresh shoppers: Please start saving plastic Super Fresh grocery bags. Odenton Elementary School will earn money for recycling the bags. The bags can be dropped off at the Family Development Office at Odenton Elementary School.

West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce will hold a Community Networking Night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Odenton Fire Hall on Route 175. Many organizations will participate, including Anne Arundel County Animal Control, Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks, Anne Arundel County Public Library and Chesapeake Bay County Wanderers.

Others are Hospice of the Chesapeake, International Order of Job's Daughters, Kiwanis Club of Odenton, Odenton Family Development Community, Odenton Heritage Society, O'Malley Senior Center, Parents Action of Maryland and Partners in Care. Also participating will be Piney Orchard Ice Arena, Severn Improvement Association, WB&A Recreation/Commuter Trail Association, West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce, West County Republican Club, Woods Adult Day Care Center and representatives of U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski's office, U.S. Rep. Wayne Gilchrest's office and state Del. Janet Greenip's office.
