No. 1 Virginia pins 13-11 loss on No. 15 Mass.

Senior midfielder Tony Nugent (Calvert Hall) scored three goals and controlled 13 of 20 faceoffs as top-ranked Virginia held off No. 15 Massachusetts, 13-11, yesterday in men's lacrosse in Charlottesville, Va.

After Buddy Hoffman scored with 3:19 remaining to get the Minutemen (0-1) within 12-10, Nugent scored on a dodge 51 seconds later to push the lead to 13-10.

Virginia (5-0) opened an 8-3 halftime lead with David Jones and Greg Traynor combining for five goals and four assists.

The Cavaliers will face No. 2 Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field at 2 p.m. Saturday. Virginia, which has lost three of the past five meetings with Hopkins, is undefeated after its first five games for the first time since 1991.

In the latest poll, Maryland made the biggest jump, rising six slots to No. 4. Towson State, which has not been below .500 after three games for 13 years, made the largest drop in the poll, falling eight spots to No. 14.

* Goucher 11, Wittenberg 8: Keith Guinto (North Carroll) had four goals and two assists to lift Goucher (3-1) past visiting Wittenberg (0-3) in the Goucher Invitational. The Gophers will face Widener in the championship tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
