March 19, 1995

At Boise, Idaho

Game 1: Mississippi State (21-7) vs. Utah (28-5).

Time: 2:40 p.m.

Outlook: Fifth seed Mississippi State won a first-round NCAA game for the first time Friday, beating Santa Clara. The Bulldogs made nine three-pointers, four by T. J. Honore. Darryl Wilson scored nine of his 19 points in the final 2:05 for Mississippi State. Fourth seed Utah, one of the tournament's youngest teams, overcame an early case of jitters to handle Long Beach State on Friday. Brandon Jessie scored 22 and Keith Van Horn, the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, added 21, despite 6-for-17 shooting.

Game 2: UCLA (26-2) vs. Missouri (20-8).

Time: Approximately 5:10 p.m.

Outlook: Top seed UCLA used its best players sparingly in Friday's rout of Florida International. The Bruins led by 20 at halftime, and starters Ed O'Bannon, Tyus Edney and George Zidek went to the bench for good 4 1/2 minutes into the second half. Eighth seed Missouri had lost five of six entering the tournament and seemed in trouble after falling behind Indiana by five at halftime. But the Tigers outscored the Hoosiers 12-2 to start the second half, then made the crucial plays down the stretch. Paul O'Liney scored 22 points and Kendrick Moore 15 for the Tigers.
