No. 3 Maryland (25-7) vs. No. 11 Texas (21-8) NCAA TOURNAMENT

March 18, 1995

What: Second round, NCAA West Regional.

Where: Huntsman Center, Salt Lake City.

When: Today, approximately 7 p.m.

TV/Radio: Channel 13/WBAL (1090 AM).

First-round results: Maryland defeated Gonzaga, 83-67. Texas beat Oregon, 90-73.

Outlook: The Terps broke an NCAA tournament record with their 12th straight opening-round win without a defeat, but it wasn't easy. Neither will the game tonight. After playing in a half-court game against Gonzaga, Maryland might try to get the running, gunning Longhorns into a battle of half-court patience and full-court frenzy. Texas is coming off an impressive second-half performance against sixth-seeded Oregon, especially from its inside players. The Longhorns gave North Carolina a scare early in the season in Chapel Hill, and guard Terrence Rencher is a big-time player. If Texas can get Joe Smith in foul trouble, it could be a rough afternoon for Maryland. If Smith comes back strong, as he usually does after a rare subpar performance, the Terps will be headed to Oakland, Calif., for their second straight Sweet 16 appearance.
