Injured driver in fair condition after car hits tree

An 18-year-old Ellicott City man was listed in fair condition at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center yesterday, a day after his car crashed into a tree in Columbia.

John Herbert Beakes III, of the 11600 block of Foxspur Court, was not wearing a seat belt when the accident occurred at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

According to police, Mr. Beakes was driving north on Harpers Farm Road in Columbia's Harper's Choice Village when he steered his Dodge Shadow from the northbound fast lane to the slow lane. But the car struck a curb and then crashed into the tree, police said.

* Ellicott City: 9100 block of Frederick Road: Police arrested a 41-year-old man of no fixed address after an employee found him sleeping in an office at St. Johns Episcopal Church last Thursday night. Police said they also charged him with setting a nativity scene on fire.
