Armed man robs deliveryman at hotel

March 16, 1995

An armed man robbed a soft-drink deliveryman outside a Columbia hotel yesterday, then led police on a brief car chase before parking on the side of the highway near Ellicott City and fleeing, Howard County police said.

Police were still searching for the robber yesterday evening. No injuries were reported, said Sgt. Steve Keller, a police spokesman.

According to police, the robber approached a deliveryman on foot outside the Columbia Hilton in the 5400 block of Twin Knolls Road in Oakland Mills village at 3:45 p.m. and demanded money. When the victim handed over an undisclosed amount of cash, the robber got into a Ford Tempo and drove away, Sergeant Keller said.

Police broadcast the robbery over the radio, and a patrol officer near the intersection of U.S. 40 and U.S. 29 spotted the robber's car.

The officer gave chase and, minutes later, the robber stopped on the shoulder of Interstate 70 near Ellicott City and ran into thick woods, Sergeant Keller said. Additional officers, sheriff's deputies and state police searched unsuccessfully for the robber. Police said the abandoned vehicle had been stolen from Baltimore County.

Sergeant Keller said anyone with information should call Howard County police at 313-3200.
