Zaetz, Tirocchi lift UMBC women by Hofstra, 15-8

Senior midfielder Alison Zaetz (Old Mill) and sophomore midfielder Chrissy Tirocchi (Mount de Sales) scored four goals apiece, leading host UMBC to a 15-8 victory over Hofstra at UMBC Stadium.

The Flying Dutchmen (1-1) led, 8-7, on senior midfielder Melissa Compton's (Loch Raven) team-high third goal of the game at 13:16 of the second half. But Tirocchi tied the game less than a minute later, then Zaetz scored two straight to ignite an 8-0 UMBC spurt to finish the game.

Trailing 3-0, the Retrievers (1-0) scored five straight goals, including three by Tirocchi, for a 5-3 lead. Hofstra tied it at 5 by halftime.

UMBC sophomore goalkeeper Dani Fostik (Liberty) made 15 saves, while Hofstra sophomore goalie Stephanie Clarke stopped 19 shots.

Also scoring two goals each for the Retrievers were senior attackman Meghan McElwee (Notre Dame Prep) and junior midfielder Gina Tirocchi (Mount de Sales).

* Colgate 13, Towson State 7: Senior attackman Kara Keenan scored five goals as visiting Colgate (1-0) beat Towson State (0-1). After Tigers junior Maggie Bove scored to put them ahead 1-0, the Red Raiders went on a 5-0 run.

Keenan scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to push the lead to 11-3. Colgate junior Alethea Bailey added four goals.

The Tigers were led by senior Tara Bailey and sophomore Megan Drake (Mount Hebron), who each had two goals.
