VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Eleanor Barr of Severna Park

The Volunteer: Eleanor Barr has been a volunteer with the Historic Annapolis Foundation since 1984.

Ms. Barr, a Severna Park resident, became involved with the foundation because of her interest in history and preservation. She volunteers as a docent about two days a week at the Shiplap House and Maritime Museum in Annapolis.

A member of St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Annapolis, she taught in Anne Arundel and Charles counties before her retirement.

Mary Salsich, the volunteer coordinator for the foundation, writes that Ms. Barr "is extremely generous with her time. For years she planned excursions for the volunteers, consistently volunteers in the Maritime Museum and Shiplap house and is . . . involved with developing new tours, and training new volunteers."

Volunteer's comment: "I'm just personally interested in history and culture and in Annapolis.

"We have lots of opportunities for volunteers and many programs -- preservation, archaeology, the [William Paca House] . . . the Maritime Museum. We have a very active archaeology department and some very active volunteers there.

"This is my most serious interest. I've found it extremely rewarding personally and I think preservation is extremely important."

About the organization: The Historic Annapolis Foundation is seeking volunteers to work as docents at the Paca House and Garden and as guides at the Maritime Museum and Shiplap House.

Volunteer orientation sessions have been scheduled at the Paca House, 186 Prince George St., at 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 21-23 and, for weekend volunteers, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 27 and April 3 and 10.

Orientation sessions include a slide tour highlighting the foundation's history and museums.

For information about volunteer opportunities, call Ms. Salsich at 263-5553.
