Major League Baseball -- Announced the following changes to the ruling executive council: New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner replaced California Angels owner Jackie Autry, whose term expired; New York Mets president Fred Wilpon replaced Fred Kuhlmann, the retired CEO of the St. Louis Cardinals; and Montreal Expos president Claude Brochu replaced former San Diego Padres owner Tom Werner. Steinbrenner and Wilpon got three-year terms; Brochu's term expires at the end of the year.

California Angels -- Signed P Mike Schooler to a minor-league contract.

Minnesota Twins -- Signed OF Jerald Clark to a minor-league contract.

St. Louis Cardinals -- Signed IF-OF Darnell Coles to a minor-league contract.

San Diego Padres -- Signed P Russ Spear to a minor-league contract.

Merrillville Muddogs (Mid-America League) -- Named former Oriole Ron Kittle manager.

Basketball

Denver Nuggets -- Signed F Mark Randall to a second 10-day contract.

Golden State Warriors -- Placed F-C Carlos Rogers on the injured list with bone chips in his right ankle. Signed G Tim Legler to a 10-day contract.

Minnesota Timberwolves -- Fined G Isaiah Rider for missing a treatment session Tuesday on his injured right ankle.

New York Knicks -- Activated F Anthony Bonner from the injured list.

College

Arizona State -- Named Robin Pflugrad assistant football coach and recruiting coordinator.

Massachusetts -- Suspended freshman G Andre Burks from the basketball team after his arraignment on charges of assault and battery. He is accused of slamming his girlfriend's head into a wall.

Oregon -- Named Chris Petersen receivers coach.

San Francisco State -- Announced that its 64-year-old football program, a Division II power through the 1950s and 1960s, has been terminated to comply with a California State University system gender-equity order.

Arizona Cardinals -- Agreed to a one-year contract with RB Mark Higgs, reportedly for $200,000.

Denver Broncos -- Signed unrestricted free-agent LB Britt Hager, who had been with the Philadelphia Eagles. Waived LB Mike Croel. Signed FB John Ivlow.

Kansas City Chiefs -- Signed LT Jeff Criswell, a starter for the New York Jets the past seven years.

New Orleans Saints -- Agreed to terms with unrestricted free-agent P Klaus Wilmsmeyer, who had been with the San Francisco 49ers.

L New York Jets -- Announced the retirement of DT Bill Pickel.

Seattle Seahawks -- Waived TE Ferrell Edmunds (Maryland), who was sidelined for the final nine games last season because of bulging disks in his back; his salary was $857,000 last season. Signed restricted free-agent WR Torrance Small (49 catches) to an offer sheet reportedly worth $5.5 million over four years; the Saints have one week to match the offer or they will receive a fifth-round draft choice as compensation.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- Agreed to terms on a four-year contract with unrestricted free-agent WR Alvin Harper, who had been with the Dallas Cowboys.

Washington Redskins -- Signed unrestricted free-agent LB Rod Stephens, who had been with the Seattle Seahawks.

CFL -- Announced that an agreement to purchase the Ottawa Rough Riders has been reached with Chicago businessman Horn Chen.

Edmonton Eskimos (CFL) -- Signed OL Terris Chorney.

Golf

PGA Tour -- Announced that after an absence of 37 years, it will return to western Canada with the addition of the Greater Vancouver Open on Aug. 22-28, 1996.

Hockey

NHL -- Suspended San Jose Sharks F Andrei Nazarov four games without pay and fined him the maximum $500 allowed under the collective bargaining agreement for head-butting the Winnipeg Jets' Stephane Quintal during a game Saturday.

Mighty Ducks of Anaheim -- Acquired D Milos Holan from the Philadelphia Flyers for C Anatoli Semenov.

Buffalo Sabres -- Assigned D David Cooper from AHL Rochester to ECHL South Carolina.

Montreal Canadiens -- Assigned RW Oleg Petrov to AHL Fredericton.

New Jersey Devils -- Recalled LW Reid Simpson from AHL Albany. Announced that D Ken Daneyko suffered a damaged cruciate ligament in a fight with Joe Kocur during last night's game with the New York Rangers and will be lost to the team for at least four weeks.

New York Islanders -- Recalled D Paul Stanton from IHL Denver.

Quebec Nordiques -- Sent D Jon Klemm to AHL Cornwall.

Tampa Bay Lightning -- Recalled C Brent Gretzky from IHL Atlanta.

Toronto Maple Leafs -- Sent LW Ken Belanger to AHL St. John's.

Vancouver Canucks -- Re-signed LW Sergio Momesso to a three-year contract that will average $950,000.

Washington Capitals -- Assigned D John Slaney to AHL Portland for conditioning.
