Man killed in apparently accidental shooting

An apparently accidental shooting, resulted in the death of a 21-year-old Westminster man, state police reported yesterday. The shooting occurred about 3 p.m. Sunday in a heavily wooded area along Blue Heron Drive off Old Manchester Road, police said.

Scott Edward Malinowski was shot in the upper abdomen with a .22-caliber long rifle slug when a friend's weapon discharged while the men were target shooting in a woods east of Route 27, troopers said. John Hall Jr., 20, of Hampstead was loading his rifle when the weapon discharged, police said.

An ambulance crew from Westminster administered emergency care before transporting the injured man to the parking lot of Random House on Route 27, where he was placed in a state police MedEvac helicopter and flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. He died at 4:44 p.m., a hospital spokeswoman said.

No charges were filed in the shooting pending a review.
