Family center to sponsor kindergarten zoo

The Odenton Family Development Center and Odenton Elementary School are sponsoring a kindergarten zoo from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. March 28.

This is a free activity for parents and youngsters who are 3 to 5 years old and not enrolled in kindergarten.

Space is limited, so register early. Each child will receive a gift related to the activities. On-site care for children of other ages will be available if needed. Please bring infants in strollers or infant seats.

* The center will hold a free financial planning class from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday at Odenton Elementary to discuss providing for family security, building an education fund and investing for retirement.

* "Practical Realities," a workshop for parents and child- care providers about the American With Disabilities Act, how it pertains to child care and understanding children's disabilities and accommodating them, is being sponsored by the center from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday.

The Odenton Teen Club for young people 13 to 19 years old meets Tuesdays and Wednesdays to discuss issues and concerns and plan activities.

Club meetings are from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the YWCA West County Family Support Center, 8379 Piney Orchard Parkway.

One event coming up is the free Fashion Show Extravaganza. The fashion show begins at 3 p.m. April 1 at the Odenton Elementary School.

The Nichols-Bethel United Methodist Preschool is accepting fall registration for 3- and 4-year-olds.

* Order tickets now for the church's spaghetti dinner from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. April 1.

The menu includes pasta with meat sauce, garlic bread, salad bar, dessert, coffee, tea and punch.

The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children ages 6 to 12. Children under 6 eat for free. Seating is limited, and tickets will not be sold after March 26 or at the door, with the exception of children's seats.

If you are interested in improving health care for children, join the Ready at Five Partnership at its first meeting at 4 p.m. Thursday at Odenton Elementary School.

The group is working with the state chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics on an initiative called Building Healthy Communities in Maryland.

The initiative will involve health providers, representatives of community groups, educators, parents, seniors and other "stake holders" to look at the health needs of children in Odenton and plan for services that will best meet those needs. Information: (410) 547-9200.

The Chesapeake Plantation Walking Horse Club will meet at 7:30 p.m. today at the Odenton Elementary School teachers lounge.

Enthusiasts of all breeds and riding styles are invited to view the video, "Through the Gaits of Pleasure," that analyzes the gaits of plantation Tennessee walking horses, with particular emphasis on their famous and smooth running walk.

The club was formed to promote the versatility of the Tennessee walking horse for pleasure and competition. Members meet monthly for trail rides and are helping to organize this year's Anne Arundel County School Show Series to be held at the county fairgrounds.

Members share information on jumping, driving, breeding and drill.

You don't have to own a horse to belong, and some members own breeds other than Walkers.

Registration for all spring sports and for returning cheerleaders will be held from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday.

Registration will be at Arundel Middle School, 1179 Hammond Lane, Odenton. The fees are $35 for one child in a family, $10 for the second child in a family and $5 for each additional child.

The O'Malley Senior Center, is accepting registration for the Anne Arundel Community College/Continuing Education Classes, Cycle IV, from 9 a.m. to noon now through Friday.

The center offers a range of courses in the arts (oil painting, drawing, watercolor, art history and portraitures), creative arts (ceramics, sewing and country crafts), and physical fitness (low-impact aerobics, morning stretch, armchair exercise, ballroom dancing, country line dancing and yoga).

Introduction to computers will be offered in this cycle.

Volunteers will be available to assist with registration and to provide information on courses.

There is no tuition for seniors 60 years of age and older, however, there is a registration fee of $20 for the 10-week cycle. Class sizes are limited and early registration is recommended.
