Eighth-ranked Severna Park brought a victory cake to last night's Class 4A East Region final in Gambrills, hoping to cut into it as part of a celebration.

Instead, while the Falcons were consoled in their locker room by their coaches and athletic director, No. 6 Arundel took turns cutting the net after its 51-50 victory.

Arundel's first berth in the state tournament wasn't secured until the Falcons missed a free throw and put-back in the last two seconds.

Junior center Jen Mottar made two free throws with 33 seconds left to erase a 50-49 lead that had been created when Severna Park's Jen Holmes followed a miss by Alli Adams 22 seconds earlier.

Arundel's Shannon Noon and Sherice Proctor each missed the front end of a one-and-one, with Holmes grabbing both rebounds. The second miss came with six seconds left and gave Severna Park another chance.

Actually, two chances. Sandy Jenkin was fouled by Mottar near midcourt with two seconds remaining and missed the free throw. Angela DeSalvo grabbed the offensive rebound to the left of the basket, but her shot bounced off the glass as time expired.

Arundel (24-0) completed a three-game sweep of the Falcons (20-4), but the total margin was only six points. It will play Thursday at UMBC in the state semifinals.

Chavonne Hammond had another superb game for Arundel with 13 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks. LaChelle McHenry scored 10 points.
