Age: 17

Katie, a senior, has a 4.0 grade-point average and is ranked first ++ in her class of 315. She is a member of the National Honor Society and was a semifinalist in the Maryland Distinguished Scholar Program. She has been on the Principal's Honor Roll for 13 quarters and was named Outstanding Senior by the Ellicott City Optimists.

As a ninth grader, Katie was on the Freshman Board. In her sophomore year she joined the Lancer Drill Team, Spanish Club and Students Helping Other People (S.H.O.P.)

As a junior, she became Lieutenant of the Lancer Drill team, was named to the National Honor Society, became a tutor and worked with Prom Promise as part of S.H.O.P.

This year, she is captain of the drill team, a member of the National Honor Society, a tutor, member of Students for Environmental Awareness and S.H.O.P. She went to the National Cheerleaders Association Danz Camp this past summer at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

Katie has been dancing since she was 5. She has taken jazz, tap, ballet, pointe, lyrical and tap solo classes at Backstage Dance Studio. She also is a student teacher at the studio and has been a counselor at the Backstage camp for four years.

Katie, a member of the National Cheerleaders Association All-American Drill Team, participated Jan. 1 in the Peach Bowl half-time show in Atlanta. To become a member of the team, students participate in several performances and are judged from a field of about 200. The top 10 are chosen from this field.

Katie has performed solo dances at her high school's half-time shows and at the Florence Bain Senior Center and Almost Family adult day care center. Among the other events where she has also danced are the Miss Howard County Pageant, Waverly Elementary Fall Festival and the Columbia Veterans Parade. At the Miss America Boardwalk Parade in Atlantic City, the band and drill team took first place in the competitions her sophomore year.

Katie has been named Student of the Month twice, once for math and once for her art. Her artwork was displayed during the Week of Excellence at her school. She enjoys drawing and painting.

Katie does baby-sitting and mows lawns in her spare time.

Katie either is taking or teaching dance classes about 20 hours a week and enjoys choreography. She also likes art and reads fiction and novels.

Her parents are Paul and Mary Catherine Paolisso.

Plans: She plans to attend college and is looking at Stewartstown and Bucknell universities. She was accepted at Dusquesne University.

Katie would like to earn a master's degree in business administration and is thinking about getting into advertising after her college career.

Her comments: "I like to dance because it is a lot of fun," said Katie. I have a lot of friends I have met during dance and I like performing."
