Walter C. Blatt Jr. United Supply president

Walter C. Blatt Jr., who retired in 1986 as president of United Supply and Distributing Co. but remained a consultant to the business he bought in 1959, died Wednesday of cancer in Upperco. He was 69.

He also was a general partner in Gibson and Associates, a real estate investment partnership. Earlier, he owned Metal Distributing Co. in Alexandria, Va., and United Energy Products in Crofton. The St. Louis native began his business career in Baltimore in 1950 with Rheem Manufacturing Co.

Mr. Blatt served in the Navy in the Pacific during World War II, earned his bachelor's degree from Washington University in St. Louis in 1947 and his master's from the Harvard Business School in 1948.

His wife of 35 years, the former Marjorie Haile, died in 1985.

Services for Mr. Blatt were conducted Friday.

He is survived by a daughter, Haile Gibson Blatt Bell of Glyndon; a brother, Carl Blatt of St. Louis; two sisters, Lois Salzmann of Potosi, Mo., and Marilyn Werder of Manchester, Mo.; two granddaughters; and a special friend, Jane Howard of Upperco.
