Two women, one pregnant, die in Wash. courthouse shooting

SEATTLE -- A gunman killed his pregnant mail-order bride and one of her friends, and critically wounded another in the King County Courthouse as they waited to testify yesterday in the couple's annulment hearing, authorities said.

Timothy C. Blackwell, 47, was subdued by corrections officers after firing about a half-dozen shots shortly after 9 a.m., police said.

Mr. Blackwell met and married his wife, Susana Remerata Blackwell, in the Philippines two years ago. They separated two weeks after she came to the United States.

He claimed his 25-year-old wife duped him into the marriage, in part so she could live in America. She contended that he beat her, court records show. He filed for annulment; she filed for divorce.

Killed were Mrs. Blackwell, her 7-month-old fetus, and Phoebe Dizon, 46, authorities said. A third woman, Veronica Laurenda, also a friend of Mrs. Blackwell, was in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds.
