CFL team signs 2 free-agent defensive backs

The Baltimore Football Club yesterday announced the signing of two free-agent defensive backs, free safety Jaime Mendez of Kansas State and strong safety Jason Bryant of Morehouse College.

The 6-foot, 200-pound Mendez was a consensus first-team All-American his senior season in 1993. He set a school record with 15 career interceptions. Bryant, 6-2 and 210, is the all-time interception leader at Morehouse with 25. He will try to make the Canadian Football League team as a linebacker.

In other developments:

* Chad Bolen begins work today as director of corporate promotions. He previously directed game-day operations for the NBA Charlotte Hornets. Facilities manager Jobie Waldt will direct game-day operations in 1995.

* The club's charity basketball team will play a makeup game against Channel 2 tonight at 7 at Golden Ring Middle School.

* "A Season to Remember," a 30-minute special on Baltimore's inaugural CFL season, will air Saturday at 1:30 p.m. on Channel 2. The video, and a $10 gift certificate to the team's Stadium Store, will be given to all season ticket holders who renew by the March 15 deadline.
