South River's Newman wins shot put at Class 1A-2A meet

South River senior Adrian Newman became the county's first 1994-95 indoor season state champion by claiming first in the shot put at yesterday's Class 1A-2A State Indoor Track and Field Championships at the 5th Regiment Armory.

Newman won the event with a toss of 50 feet, 1/2 inch.

The Seahawks' Sarah Wood and Jen Smith finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the girls high jump, and teammate Shannon Simmons, a freshman, took sixth in the girls 3,200 run. South River's Jason Berger finished fifth in the pole vault (11-0).

The 4A schools will compete at the Armory tomorrow, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
