Millersville man killed on Route 97 in accident involving four vehicles

February 17, 1995|By From staff reports

A Millersville man was killed yesterday when his Chevrolet Blazer and another car collided on Route 97 near Route 100, state police reported.

Charles R. Phelps, 66, of the 1100 block of Dicus Mill Road, was driving his Blazer north on Route 97 at 6:50 a.m. when a 1985 Volvo driven by Franklin J. Mayr Jr., 46, of the first block of W. Conway St., Baltimore, sideswiped his vehicle, Trooper Padraic Lacy of the Glen Burnie barracks said..

The force of that accident caused Mr. Phelps' Blazer to slam into the back of a 1990 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Barry S. Shawkey, 36, of the 700 block of 207th St. in Pasadena, Trooper Lacy said.

Mr. Shawkey's truck then hit a 1990 Mack delivery truck driven by Timothy J. Gray, 32, of the 6400 block of Colonial Knoll Drive in Glen Burnie.

Mr. Phelps was pronounced dead at the scene, Trooper Lacy said. Mr. Shawkey was taken to North Arundel Hospital where he was treated and released.

The drivers of the other vehicles were not injured, Trooper Lacy said.

Traffic was delayed for two hours as northbound Route 97 traffic was diverted onto a single lane of Route 100 eastbound. Police said cars were backed up as far south as New Cut Road, two exits away.

Trooper Lacy said investigators have ruled out speeding as the cause of the accident and are now looking at slick road conditions as a possible factor.

He said because of road construction and rush-hour traffic, "there's no way anybody can do 55," the speed limit on that section of the road.
