Police investigating new priest allegations

February 12, 1995|By From Staff Reports

Police in Prince George's and Montgomery counties have begun investigating new reports of alleged sexual abuse by four Roman Catholic priests of the Archdiocese of Washington who were removed from their posts last month.

After the priests admitted to abuse, other men came forward with allegations. Cpl. Kenneth Scott of the Prince George's County police said yesterday his department and Montgomery County police began interviewing "possible victims" last week.

The priests and their recent positions are the Revs. Edward Hartel, 58, Shrine of St. Jude in Rockville; Thomas S. Schaefer, 69, Carroll Manor nursing home, Hyattsville; Alphonsus Smith, 70, St. Bernardine of Siena Church, Suitland; and Edward Pritchard, 50, St. Mary's Church, Washington.
