Jane DiJulio of Arnold
The volunteer: A county native, mother of four grown children and former schoolteacher, Ms. DiJulio is an active member of the Friends of Sarah's House, the fund-raising arm for the West County shelter for homeless women and children.
She is one of the original members of Friends of Sarah's House, which started about three years ago.
In addition to her role as coordinator for fund-raising benefits, she occasionally volunteers at the shelter.
She also is founder and president of the Republican Professional Women's Club, which supports Sarah's House as one of its community service projects.
Jane Strong, volunteer coordinator for Sarah's House, writes, "She encouraged the group to plan a bull and oyster roast in March of 1993 and chaired the first two, which netted almost $10,000. She also spearheaded two fall golf tournaments . . . and was the events coordinator for the first winter dance."
Volunteer's comment: "I just really enjoy Sarah's House so much . . . it's such a unique type of shelter. I think it's one of a kind in this county.
"It's nice to be with an organization where you can really see things happening. They just opened two buildings this past July for family reunification. There are three-bedroom apartments.
"It's such a great program . . . they're making great strides in helping people."
