January 31, 1995

A Woodbine man remained in critical but stable condition at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center last night after being severely beaten in a bar fight late Sunday night.

Maryland State Police said Jeffrey Lynn Griffith of the 5900 block of Woodbine Road was attacked about 11:40 p.m. Saturday at Ray's Rewsters, a restaurant and bar on Ridge Road in Taylorsville.

Mr. Griffith, 34, was flown Sunday night to the shock trauma center in Baltimore. Police said the victim was punched repeatedly.

Police have charged Kevin Mark Whaples, 32, of the 5400 block of Cabbage Springs Road in Mount Airy with assault with intent to murder. Mr. Whaples was released from the Carroll County Detention Center yesterday on $15,000 bond.

4 juveniles charged with setting boat afire

Four juveniles were arrested in Woodbine during the weekend after residents discovered a 20-foot boat on fire in the CSX railway right of way near Flag Marsh Road.

About 20 firefighters from Mount Airy and Lisbon of Howard County responded to the fire at 11:15 a.m. Friday and had it under control within five minutes.

Upon their arrival, firefighters said, they saw several youths in the immediate area. One had minor burns on his face and was treated by paramedics. The youths -- ages 10, 13, 14 and 15 -- were held until the arrival of Maryland State Police and the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office. After an investigation that determined that the boat had been abandoned in the right of way about six months ago, the juveniles were charged with setting the fire and released to the custody of their parents.

Officials from the fire marshal's office said the boat was destroyed and determined the loss to be $200.
