Disney ads rewrite history

January 31, 1995|By San Francisco Chronicle

Ads that ran in national newspapers last week for the forthcoming movie "Jefferson in Paris" used images of the U.S. Constitution.

Then it was learned at Walt Disney Co., where the film and ad were created, that neither Thomas Jefferson nor Nick Nolte, who plays him in the film, authored the document.

"We all walked in Monday morning and said, '. . . it should have been the Declaration of Independence,' " a Disney executive told Newsweek.

Disney had planned to build a Virginia theme park to celebrate American history.
