Stoffey, Loyola turn back Niagara, 73-61 STATE WOMEN

Patty Stoffey scored 16 points to lead Loyola (12-5, 3-3) past host Niagara, 73-61, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game yesterday.

Camille Joyner helped Stoffey -- the MAAC's leading scorer who was held to eight points below her average -- with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Teammate Lynn Albert finished with 15.

It is the second straight time Loyola has defeated Niagara (7-10, 2-4).

* Coppin State 65, Howard 64: Deiora Walker scored a career high 22 points to lead Coppin State (10-8, 7-1) past host Howard in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game. Howard's Denique Graves scored a game-high 24 points.

The loss kept the Eagles in a first-place tie in the MEAC.

* College of Notre Dame 86, Meredith 74: Emily Yanero (Mt. Hebron) and Jen Chaney each scored 20 points to lead visiting College of Notre Dame (6-8).

Meredith Jones scored 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds for Meredith (8-8).

* Baltimore City CC 67, Potomac State 59: Shondray Burnham scored 15 as host Baltimore City CC (8-6) ran past Potomac State.

* Navy 69, Lehigh 62: Plebe Becky Dowling scored 24 points as host Navy defeated Lehigh (2-16, 1-6) in a Patriot League game. Dowling also had nine rebounds, four assists and five steals.

After trailing 36-30 at halftime, the Mids (8-10, 4-3) scored 15 unanswered points to start the second half, which gave them a 47-39 advantage.

* Catholic 66, Western Maryland 64: Senior forward Martha Cleary scored a season-high 27 points and visiting Catholic survived a Western Maryland rally in the final two minutes for a non-conference victory.

Cleary made her fourth three-pointer of the game with 2:42 remaining to give the Cardinals (6-8) a 66-56 lead. Sandi DeJager (18 points) then scored Western Maryland's (11-4) final eight points.

* Bowie State 67, Virginia Union 62: Yetisha Mackey scored 19 points as host Bowie State defeated host Virginia Union in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association game.

Yolanda Matthews added 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for the Bulldogs (13-4, 5-0).

Marqueetta Randolph led Virginia Union (13-6, 6-2) with 23.

* Salisbury State 68, St. Mary's 39: Kim Roth scored 22 points to lead Salsibury State over St. Mary's (2-8, 0-5) in a Capital Athletic Conference game. Ava Tasker had 14 points for host Salisbury State (13-4, 7-1).

* Gettysburg 77, Johns Hopkins 73: Ann Hymes and Kelly Geise scored 19 points each to lead host Gettysburg (13-4, 7-1) in a University Athletic Association game.

Amy Dodrill led Johns Hopkins (12-5) with 24 points.

* Marymount 82, Goucher 63: Sharee McClellan scored 22 points and dished out seven assists to lead Marymount (12-4, 7-1) past Goucher College (10-7 6-2) in the Capital Athletic Conference. Didi Cotton led host Goucher with 16.

* Mount St. Mary's 84, Rider 70: Susie Rowlyk scored a career-high 29 points off the bench as visiting Mount St. Mary's defeated Rider University in a Northeast conference game.

Rider was led by freshman Patricka Smith with 15 points.

Since Rider defeated Mount St. Mary's on Feb. 23, 1993, the Mountaineers have won 35 of 36 games against NEC teams, including all 21 games last season.
