Wyatt leads UMBC past Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Senior guard Eric Wyatt fueled a UMBC rally by scoring all 16 of his points in the second half as the Retrievers defeated Winthrop, 71-65, yesterday in a Big South Conference game.

UMBC (8-10, 5-3) trailed 51-45 with 9:47 left when Wyatt scored 13 of the team's next 20 points, including a breakaway layup with 17 seconds left that gave the Retrievers a 10-point advantage. Tony Thompson (19 points) led four UMBC players in double figures. Marc Lay and Artie Walker each scored 13.

Winthrop (5-12) took a 19-18 lead eight minutes into the game and led 29-20 before Winthrop's shooting percentage dropped to 36 percent.
