Sutton Place Gourmet merges with Hay Day

Sutton Place Gourmet, a Rockville-based specialty food chain, has merged with Hay Day Market, a chain of gourmet stores in Fairfield County, Conn., and Westchester County, N.Y., company officials have announced.

The merger of 800-employee Sutton Place and 425-employee Hay Day will create a firm with projected 1995 revenues of nearly $100 million, according to a Sutton Place press release announcing the merger.

Mark Berey, president and chief executive officer of Sutton Place, will head the merged company.

Sallie and Alex VanRensselaer, owners of Westport, Conn.-based Hay Day, will be senior officers with one seat on the board of directors.

"The combined strength of these two organizations creates tremendous and exciting opportunities to market and merchandise specialty foods as well as lead the industry in product development and new product introduction," Mr. Berey said.

Since its founding in 1980, Sutton Place has grown to a chain of seven stores, ranging in size from 4,000 to 20,000 square feet.

Six are in the metropolitan Washington area and one is on Reisterstown Road in Pikesville.

The company also operates a restaurant in the Washington area.

Hay Day operates five stores, averaging about 8,500 square feet, four in Connecticut and one in Scarsdale, N.Y.

The merged company will not change the Hay Day name, but it will replace the firm's computers and upgrade its software.

Sutton Place's stores are modeled after European markets and offer upper-end products ranging from custom-cut and oven-ready prime meats to hand-made imported sweets and hundreds of varieties of cheese, caviar, truffles, foie gras and pates.

The company also plans to experiment with smaller stores by opening a 1,200-foot "Sutton on the Run" shop in Potomac next month.
