Former pastor charged with molesting teen-ager

The former pastor of a Methodist church in Montgomery County has been charged by Anne Arundel County police with sexually molesting a boy at his church and at his vacation home in Shady Side in the 1970s, authorities said yesterday.

Harry Budd Miles, 65, whose summer home is in the 5000 block of Lerch Road, surrendered to Anne Arundel police Tuesday. He was charged with child abuse, three sex offenses, perverted practice and battery, and released on his own recognizance.

Mr. Miles has been charged with similar crimes in Montgomery County, police said.

Anne Arundel charging documents said the suspect and the victim met at the church, which they would not identify, in 1970 when Mr. Miles was the pastor and the boy was 11. The abuse allegedly began a year later and continued until the youth was 17, charging documents allege. The victim was 13 when Mr. Miles began taking him to the house on Lerch Road, where he is accused of fondling the boy and having sex with him, according to the charging documents.

The documents said Mr. Miles took the boy for overnight trips to the Shady Side home six or seven times a year, usually Friday or Saturday nights, with the boy's parents' consent. The documents also accuse Mr. Miles of having sex with the boy in Montgomery County.

Detective Shelly Madison of the Anne Arundel Police Department's child abuse unit wrote in her application for a statement of charges that Mr. Miles admitted to having sex with the victim. The charges agains Mr. Miles carry maximum sentences totaling 55 years.
