After unexpected wins over Michigan State, Ohio State and Northeastern yesterday, Towson State gymnastics coach Dick Filbert proclaimed Towson State's first home meet "a day for the little guys."

The Tigers overcame injuries to score 190.75 for first place. Michigan State placed second (189.5), Ohio State third (183.6) and Northeastern fourth (176.525).

Sophomore Erin Shanley led the victory by placing first all-around with a meet score of 38.075. Junior Pam Johnson finished second all-around with 37.825.

Shanley also placed first all-around when the Tigers opened their season with a double victory over George Washington and Rutgers last week.

On the balance beam, senior and two-time All-ECAC performer Wendy Chalmers placed first with a personal-record 9.8 score.

"[Due to injuries], on our floor routines and bars we were forced to use the 10th and 11th on our [12-person] lineup. . . . The praise goes to the youngsters for really coming through," said Filbert.

Performances like those by sophomore Sari Lehmuskallio, who placed first in floor competition (9.65) and tied for first place on vault (9.775), and freshman Katherine Creswell, who tied for third place on the beam (9.7), compensated for the absence of two injured veterans.

Senior Joy Rudy injured her knee at the Tigers' first meet and is not expected to return until the end of the season. Senior Karen Sturek may return for Saturday's home meet against West Virginia.

After that, the Tigers, ranked 18th in the nation last year, will travel to George Washington before playing host for the Towson

State Invitational Meet on Feb. 18.
